How to Redeem Gift Cards at Walmart, Canadian Tire and Metro: A Step-by-Step Guide

Redeeming a gift card should be the easy part, but each major Canadian retailer has small quirks. Here is how to avoid the common mistakes.

Buying a gift card is simple. Redeeming one — especially at a busy self-checkout on a Saturday afternoon — is where most Canadian shoppers hit friction. This guide walks through the exact redemption steps at three of the country's biggest retailers: Walmart Canada, Canadian Tire and Metro. It also covers what to do when a card's magnetic stripe fails, when the balance doesn't match the receipt, and how to combine a gift card with loyalty programs.

Before you redeem any card

Run through this short checklist first. It saves time at the register and avoids the embarrassment of a declined card.

  • Confirm the card is activated. Cashiers activate the card at the moment of purchase by scanning the back. If the buyer didn't keep the receipt, a retailer can usually verify activation by the card number.
  • Check the balance online or by phone before you head to the store. All three retailers in this guide offer free balance lookups.
  • Bring the physical card. Canadian retailers generally do not accept screenshots of gift card numbers, unlike digital-only brands.
  • Keep your receipt and the card together until the balance is zero, in case you need a return.

Walmart Canada

Walmart is the most flexible of the three retailers when it comes to gift card acceptance. The card works at every cashier-staffed lane, at self-checkout, and on Walmart.ca for standard delivery and pickup orders.

In store

  1. Scan or hand your items to the cashier as usual.
  2. When prompted for payment, present the gift card. At self-checkout, select Pay with gift card and swipe the magnetic stripe or scan the barcode on the back.
  3. If the purchase exceeds the card's balance, Walmart's system will automatically charge the remainder to a second payment method — you'll be asked to tap or insert your debit or credit card.
  4. The receipt will show the gift card's new remaining balance at the bottom. Keep it.

Online at Walmart.ca

  1. Add items to your cart and proceed to checkout.
  2. Under payment, choose Apply a gift card and enter the 16-digit card number and PIN (on the back, under the scratch panel).
  3. You can stack up to five gift cards on a single Walmart.ca order. The site will show the remaining balance to pay.
  4. Credit or debit is then used for anything left over, including shipping fees not covered by the gift card.

What goes wrong

The most common Walmart gift card problem is trying to use a Walmart U.S. card on Walmart.ca, or vice versa. They are not interchangeable. The second most common is shoppers who drain the card to near zero and then are surprised when Walmart doesn't give cash change on a balance under $5 — that rule only applies in Quebec.

Canadian Tire

Canadian Tire gift cards work at Canadian Tire stores, PartSource, and Mark's (subject to category restrictions). They also work online at Canadiantire.ca, but note that the website still requires a valid credit card on file for fraud screening, even when the order total is fully covered by a gift card.

In store

  1. At the cashier or self-checkout, select Gift card as the payment type.
  2. Scan the barcode on the back or swipe the magnetic stripe.
  3. Canadian Tire Money (paper or digital) can be applied in addition to a gift card. Present your Triangle Rewards card or scan it in the app before presenting the gift card.
  4. The receipt will display the gift card balance after the transaction. Keep the card — Canadian Tire cards are reloadable.

Online at Canadiantire.ca

At payment, click Add gift card, enter the 19-digit card number and the 4-digit PIN. You can apply multiple cards to one order. Canadian Tire does not currently let you load a gift card into your account for later use — you must enter it at each checkout.

Metro (and Super C, Food Basics, Adonis)

Metro Inc. operates under several banners in Quebec and Ontario. A Metro gift card purchased at a Metro store is accepted across Metro, Super C, Food Basics, Adonis and Première Moisson locations. It can also be used at the pharmacy counter inside the same store for over-the-counter purchases, but not for prescriptions.

In store

  1. Present your items and, at payment, hand the card to the cashier or scan it at self-checkout.
  2. Enter the PIN if prompted (some newer cards require it; older cards don't).
  3. metro&moi points are earned on the pre-tax subtotal regardless of whether you pay with a gift card — so scan your loyalty card first.
  4. In Quebec, if your balance is under $5 after the purchase, you can legally request the remaining amount in cash at the customer service desk.

Online

Metro's online grocery platform currently accepts gift cards only on select orders and delivery windows, and the feature varies by province. If it isn't offered at checkout, redeem the card in store against a pickup order instead.

Troubleshooting a declined card

A declined gift card rarely means the card has no money on it. In our experience, the top three causes are:

  1. Magstripe wear. After a few uses the black stripe can be scratched. Cashiers can key in the number manually from the front of the card.
  2. Activation delay. New cards occasionally take up to an hour to show up in the retailer's system. If your card was purchased minutes ago, wait and retry.
  3. Wrong network. Prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards require a signature-strip signature and a valid Canadian postal code at gas pumps. Self-checkout may ask for it too.

Combining gift cards with loyalty and coupons

Across all three retailers, gift cards are treated as a form of tender (like cash), not as a discount. That means you can always stack them with paper coupons, printed loyalty-program offers and manufacturer rebates. It also means taxes are calculated on the full pre-discount subtotal before the gift card is applied. This is occasionally misunderstood at self-checkout — the machine isn't cheating you, the law is simply that tax is computed on the product, not on the payment method.

Final tips

Once a gift card balance is below $10, use it deliberately on a single purchase and ask for a receipt. Balances under a dollar are notoriously easy to forget in a drawer. If the card is reloadable — like Canadian Tire's — consider topping it up instead of buying a new card. And for high-value cards, photograph the back (including the scratched-off PIN) and store the image in a password-protected notes app, so a lost card doesn't become a lost gift.
