How to Check Your Gift Card Balance in Canada: Every Major Retailer

A quick reference table of balance lookup methods for the gift cards Canadians actually own.

By Marc LévesquePublished 6 min read

Most Canadian shoppers find out their gift card balance at the worst possible moment — in line at the till. A one-minute lookup before you shop avoids the embarrassment, and it also helps you spot tampered cards before any damage is done. This short guide summarizes the balance-check methods for the retailers Canadians buy from most.

What you'll need

Every lookup asks for the card number and, on most newer cards, a 4-digit PIN under a silver scratch panel. Have both ready before you click or call. If the PIN panel is already scratched off when you bring the card home, treat the card as compromised and return it to the store with your receipt.

Common issues

  • "Balance not found" usually means the card wasn't fully activated at the cashier. Bring the card and receipt back to the original store.
  • Balance is lower than expected after a single purchase — compare to your last receipt, which always prints the remaining balance at the bottom.
  • Balance went to zero without a purchase — call the retailer's fraud line immediately and file a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Two habits worth adopting

First, after you activate any gift card over $50, photograph the back of the card (number plus PIN) and store the image somewhere private. This is the single most effective recovery tool if the card is lost. Second, when a balance drops below $10, spend it deliberately — it's money, and cards with trivial balances are the ones most likely to be forgotten in a drawer.

If you run into a card that won't register a balance anywhere, our scams guide covers the next steps.
